PRP Skin Therapy
“Platelet Rich Plasma” or PRP, for short, is one of the hottest treatments in aesthetics and is the all natural way to revitalise your skin without using medicines or other lab-created products.
PRP has been used in a wide range of hospital medical applications such as ulcer healing and wound healing and has a broad evidence base in peer-reviewed scientific journals testifying to its effectiveness. PRP is very useful in aesthetic treatments so let's discuss how we can use it to best effect.
As the years go by, our skin and it's supporting tissues slowly and inevitably degenerate, resulting in sagging, wrinkles and laxity that makes us look old and tired.
PRP works by collecting and concentrating some of your own platelets and relocating them to where they are needed most ie your ageing skin!
You see, platelets have perhaps been the unsung heroes of our blood for so long, with red cells and white cells being more commonly recognised by the public for their roles in oxygen transport and immunity respectively. People forget that when you get an injury, a cut or such, it's the platelets that get activated and play the key role in healing and tissue regeneration. Platelets accumulate where they are required and release a range of key natural mediators to encourage tissue restoration and healing.
These treatments are gaining in popularity because they are fortunately both so safe and effective. The treatments have been widely publicised in beauty magazines, newspapers and by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and The Real Housewives of Chelsea and similar television series. This is mainstream stuff!
PRP really works and is endorsed and used by leading aesthetic medicine doctors and surgeons in the UK, Europe and the USA.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy?
So how does this all work?
Well first Doctor Brad takes a small sample of blood from your arm, using one of the smallest needles you can imagine, for your comfort.
Your blood is collected in the state-of-the-art and completely sterile “Cellenis” closed blood tube “gel separation” system and is never exposed to the air or outside environment to ensure compete sterility. The system is capable of concentrating your platelets up to 10 times more than the circulating concentration and a typical treatment session to the face involves the injection of between 1.6 and 3.2 billion platelets.
Once collected, Dr Brad then immediately spins your blood for ten minutes in his state of the art Cellenis centrifuge at a whopping 3500 revolutions per minute (that's an impressive 1500 “relative centrifugal force” you know)!
This highly refined process then leaves us with a straw coloured fluid (also known as a “supernatant”) containing just your plasma and platelets.
This platelet rich plasma is then drawn off in a separate syringe ready to either be
- injected into trouble areas (AKA The Vampire Facelift)
or
- applied after a dermaroller microneedling treatment (AKA The Vampire Facial)
Whichever treatment you choose, for your comfort you'll be advised to receive a numbing cream pre-applied to the treatment area while you wait.
Once those platelets get into the skin they become “activated” by molecules on the surface of other cells around them and cause them to start releasing their growth factors which results in tissue stimulation and regeneration. Remember that cells and collagen regenerate slowly on a microscopic level so it is after approximately 4-6 weeks that patients start to see the benefits in their skin.
One treatment alone is a good start but for optimum benefits a course of 3 treatments is recommended, 4-6 weeks apart.
Top-up treatment every 4-6 months are the norm for people who have seen the benefits for themselves although even an annual top-up is worthwhile.
It says a lot about the effectiveness and tolerability of the treatment that patients return time and again to have repeat treatments.
